Description
A beautiful collectible set of four U.S. postage stamps issued in 1976 to honor Clara Maass on the 100th anniversary of her birth. Ms. Maass was a courageous nurse who gave her life as she assisted in research to find a cure for Yellow Fever. She is known for wearing her Newark German hospital pin which is shown on the stamps. In March 1901, Ms. Maass volunteered to be bitten by mosquitoes that had been allowed to feed on Yellow Fever patients. She contracted a mild case of the disease and quickly recovered. Researchers lacked scientific evidence to prove mosquitoes were the route of transmission in Yellow Fever and Ms. Maass continued to volunteer for experiments.
In August, 1901, Ms. Maass was bitten by infected mosquitoes for a second time. Researchers were hoping to show that her earlier case of Yellow Fever was sufficient to immunize her against the disease. Unfortunately, this was not the case and she became ill with Yellow Fever on Aug. 14th, 1901. She died of the disease on Aug. 24th. Her death angered the public and put an end to Yellow Fever experiments on humans.
These stamps have never been used and are as fresh as they were the day they were first sold at the post office over 40 years ago! Suitable for framing, they would make a great gift for your favorite nurse or coworker.
