    Description

The HON or Bear Kachina is honored by the Hopi Indians because of his great strength. His cheeks should show a bear paw print and he is thought to be able to cure illnesses, while also watching over the tribe.
I purchased this Black Bear Kachina in Santa Fe, New Mexico on one of my many trips there to the galleries. That was 40 years ago and Black Bear has lost one of his claws, but he is still strong. I hope he joins another Kachina collection where he can continue to act as a watchman.
