    Description

A SIOUX CRIER CALLING A WAR DANCE
This is the cover of ONCE A WEEK magazine for Janurary 6, 1891. It is from E.W. Deming. There is a signature in the print on the lower right with the date 90. From a early age Deming devoted his life to painting the American Indian. Among his late work were romantic murals of the Indian for  both the American Museum of Natural History and
The Museum of the American Indian in New York. The back of the engraving has a full page article on the Indian  titled THE INDIAN PROBLEM. It compares US policy to Canadian and discusses the resettlement tribe by tribe. The author acknowledges some bad policy but suggests that the tribes relocated are happy and prosperous. One of the policies recommended is to break up the tribal connections and separate the Indians from this affiliation. The article calls for fair treatment of the Indian but some hard methods.
